Camp Lejeune Water Contamination

Toxic water at Camp Lejeune caused cancer and other health problems for over 30 years.

Published June 24, 2024

For decades, toxic chemicals contaminated the water at Camp Lejeune, leading to severe health issues.

The Camp Lejeune water contamination represents a major environmental disaster at the U.S. Marine Corps Base in North Carolina. From the 1950s to the 1980s, harmful chemicals polluted the base’s drinking water. These included volatile organic compounds like trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, benzene, and vinyl chloride.

Several sources contributed to this contamination. Leaking storage tanks, industrial spills, and improper disposal practices all played a role. As a result, military personnel, their families, and civilian employees unknowingly used this tainted water daily.

Consequently, exposure to these toxins has caused numerous health problems. These include various cancers, birth defects, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and reproductive issues.

In response, legal and legislative efforts have aimed to support those affected. For instance, the 2012 Janey Ensminger Act provides healthcare to impacted veterans and their families. More recent legislation seeks to expand compensation and coverage.

What Happened?

Toxic chemicals seeped into Camp Lejeune’s water supply over decades. This contamination caused cancers and other diseases among Marines, their families, and base residents.

Who Are We After?

In 2022, Congress passed a law allowing victims of Camp Lejeune’s toxic water to sue the government for damages.
